Description

Limón’s historic landmark, Liberty Hall, which served as a vital hub for the Black population since its construction in 1922, is set to be resurrected through the transformative Marcus Garvey Global Center initiative. Spearheaded by the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), this project aims to breathe new life into Liberty Hall, tragically destroyed by fire in 2016.

The Marcus Garvey Global Center will not only restore Liberty Hall but will also expand its footprint, encompassing over 1,400 square meters of space for businesses, events, lodging, and more. Complementing this, the adjacent Marcus Garvey Plaza will offer an additional 600 square meters of outdoor area for cultural activities and recreation.

UNIA President, Winston Norman Scott, expressed the significance of the initiative, stating, “This project is so important for restoring a vital piece of our history and identity. The Marcus Garvey Global Center will be a source of great pride and unity for our community.”

Financed through a combination of government funding, private donations, and crowdfunding, the $5.4 million project is poised to bring substantial social and economic benefits to Limón. “We envision this site becoming the vibrant heart of our community once again,” Scott added. “It will create jobs, attract tourism, and provide spaces where our people can gather, celebrate our culture, and uplift one another.”

Construction is scheduled to commence next year following the selection of a contractor. The project is committed to employing sustainable and technologically advanced building techniques. Both the UNIA and the broader Limón community eagerly anticipate the revitalization of Liberty Hall and the creation of the new Marcus Garvey Plaza.
